The manager, HR Communications serves as the primary relationship manager to assigned Practice Areas within HR or for an assigned geographical location. The manager serves in a strategic consulting role to HR leadership and project leads, delivering strategic communications counsel and project plans in support of key, global HR programs and local communication strategies.. The manager, HR Communications interacts directly with senior leadership, external consultants, and other clients of the HR Communications team to ensure a consistent approach to executing Human Resources communications. This position may manage the work of others, directly or indirectly. The manager, HR Communications reports to the Director, HR Communications.

Core Job Responsibilities

The manager, HR Communications:

  • Identifies communication opportunities for clients to align with and support Abbott’s global HR strategy.

  • Develops communication strategies and plans to guide the creation, design and implementation of communication programs and vehicles, including vehicles specific to a region.

  • Advises HR leaders as to the benefits and risks of various communication approaches.

  • Effectively manages client relationships with internal and external communication partners (Public Affairs, Corporate Communications, HR personnel, outside contractors, etc.).

  • Ensures all HR Communications are consistent and aligned with Abbott's corporate brand identity and strategic directions, business philosophies and general practices.

  • Works with HR Communication team members to ensure a cohesive and complimentary approach to the comprehensive, global HR Communications strategy

Position Accountability / Scope

The manager, HR Communications serves primarily as a relationship manager to key HR Practice Areas or regions. The manager, HR Communications has responsibility for client contracts, project budgets and project management. The manager, HR Communications must closely influence clients and coordinate with teammates to meet project deadlines and HR Communication goals. The manager, HR Communications provides communications expertise and counsel for assigned clients, projects, programs or vehicles.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism, public relations or other communication-related major.

Minimum Experience / Training Required

5-10 years experience with increasing responsibility in multiple communication roles in corporate or agency setting. Experience working with senior management or clients a must. Demonstrated ability to deliver strategic counsel as well as tactical excellence in internal communications, executive communications and relationship management a must. Prior experience with HR communications, specifically benefits, and mergers & acquisitions, strongly preferred. Experience with electronic communication, including portal technology, is also preferred. Requires strong project management skills, exceptional verbal and written communication skills, diplomacy, and multitasking ability.
