Abbott Informatics has a new opening for Program Manager - Federal Government - location Beltway. This position is located in the beltway and provides oversight for key government contracts supporting laboratory information systems. He/she is responsible for all aspects of program for major line improvement, cost reduction or capital building projects; Establishes project objectives and technical criteria for evaluating project results and activities of project team. Assures that, from operational standpoint, has all technical, manufacturing people aligned in time for project/program kickoff; makes major impact decisions. Serves as project/program sponsor; sells project to management; provides financial justification and acquires funding. Provides data and decides which projects shouldn’t go forward. Due to the nature of these programs, the Manager will need security clearance.

Main Responsibilities can include:

  • Develops, plans, coordinates and directs engineering aspects of projects of major scope and importance.

  • Defines roles and accountabilities to avoid duplicate functions.

  • Manages external engineering services effectively: recommends facilities, personnel and funds required to carry out projects.

  • Regularly requires use of ingenuity and creative thinking.

  • Focuses on cost and milestone achievement to keep costs low and productivity high.

  • Develops external engineering resources: identifies needs and contractors; develops partnership relationships with contractors/vendors.

  • Directs efforts of all project or program personnel.

  • Coordinates internal/external project resources.

  • Assists management in training, managing and evaluating less experienced engineering and technical staff. Represents organization on projects.

  • Routinely has direct contact with outside consultants, technical counterparts from key vendors and with project managers in other divisions.

  • Has regular contact with marketing, finance, product development and research and manufacturing.

  • Project/Program Engineer Applies Technology in Innovative Ways Combines technologies to anticipate or address customer needs; employs proven solutions to increase the effectiveness of engineering methodology or manufacturing process, e.g., incorporates process commonalities to reduce cycle time; attempts to leverage core technical competencies to its limit.

  • Principal Engineer/Technical Leader Creates or Advances Technology Advances recognized leading-edge technologies in a technical field; fosters an environment of innovation in others, e.g., benchmarks current solutions against outside companies.

  • Creates a novel combination of existing or new products or services. Fosters an environment of integrity Spends time with employees (including those outside own area) to share experiences, espouse organizational values, and act as a role model through actions.

  • Models integrity Acts as a role model for corporate standards of integrity and regularly coaches direct reports on meeting these standards at all time.

  • Explores multiple opportunities Structures studies integrating cross-disciplinary and cross-functional issues to arrive at optimal course of action, e.g., investigates process to meet increasing regulatory requirements while maintaining manufacturing/ construction efficiency. Defines project scope Works with marketing, product development , and manufacturing to establish scope, priorities, and schedules on multiple projects, e.g., examines the entire capital planning process for a new product or complex project.

  • Clarifies and maintains project scope Clarifies project scope definition for large or multiple projects; monitors and controls implementation plan in accordance with defined scope, e.g., monitors and corrects schedule slippage and financial overruns.

  • Conceptualizes complete solutions Creates or coordinates the design solutions for novel or complex problems; integrates regulatory and operational needs; assesses cost benefit, e.g. identifies processes and develops flow charts for a complex construction or manufacturing operation.


B.S. Engineering or equivalent plus progressive technical experience and demonstrated competence is required. Knowledge of regulations and standards affecting IVDs and Biologics.
