JOB DESCRIPTION:

Primary Function

An engineering professional who, working with little or no supervision, applies scientific knowledge, engineering knowledge, mathematics, statistical methods, and ingenuity to complete assignments related to the processing, filling, and packaging process. A Senior Engineer has general knowledge of other related disciplines beyond their own, and is able to provide guidance to members of the manufacturing engineering team.

This position will focus on technical line support including analysis and improvement of filling, sterilization, and secondary packaging equipment operations.

Core Responsibilities

  • Provides technical support for plant operations as an area engineering representative.

  • Resolves problems, such as production process deviations, quality events, and crisis situations requiring fast and appropriate decisions with rapid implementation.

  • Attends all required meetings per site Management Operating System, engaging with operations, quality and maintenance on production concerns.

  • Serves as a subject matter expert (SME) on a set of processes or a line at the plant, through the following support activities:

  • Consulting with divisional SME(s) on cost improvement projects, waste reduction projects, and in the design and implementation phases of capital projects.

  • Supports for the transfer of technology to operations, and the testing of process or equipment changes.

  • Technical review of equipment changes, evaluating impact of proposed changes to the process.

  • Performs root causes analyses on equipment and manufacturing process issues.

  • Assists the project management office in evaluating cost versus benefit or proposed process improvement projects.

  • Provides technical evaluation and implementation plan input to the Corrective Action/Preventive Action (CAPA) program.

  • Provides mentoring in technical and organizational areas within work group; monitors the improvement of other engineer(s), e.g. delegates challenging tasks to others to help them develop; provides constructive and timely feedback.

  • Participates in the evaluation of assigned staff/project team members and in the identification of development needs.

  • Resolves underlying problems. Identifies full range of customer needs and proposes solutions to address them; makes alterations in products or services to better meet (recognized or unrecognized) customer need, e.g. partners with an outside vendor to provide a better deliverable.

Project Management:

  • Independently plans and conducts small to medium-size projects within engineering specialty requiring conventional types of plans, investigations, validation documentation and/or equipment changes.

  • Establishes workable and trackable schedules. Works with staff, outside firms and/or consultants to agree on plans and timetables for a specific project. Identifies pinch points or conflicts. Sets performance metrics. Assigns responsibilities for team members. Develops a budget.

  • Maintains project controls and reporting for cost, scope and schedule. Develops execution strategy, including procurement. Balances multiple demands within assignment, e.g., executes contingency plans to recover from schedule slippage and financial overruns.

Technical/Design

  • Independently gather manufacturing performance data and performs analysis, reports findings, prepares and communicates recommendations and action plans, and executes plans to drive operational efficiency.

  • Provide technical assistance to operations by demonstrating technical expertise and leadership on high priority issues.

  • Anticipates future operational directions and utilizes benchmarking as a tool to drive improvement in areas (KPIs, OEEs, Capacity, etc.)

  • Possesses knowledge, background and working experience to apply sound engineering principles in support of liquid filling machine operation including bottle handling and machine cleaning (CIP).

  • Possesses knowledge, background and working experience to apply sound engineering principles in support of batch retort system operation.

  • Possesses knowledge, background and working experience to apply sound engineering principles in support of secondary packaging equipment operation including bottle handling and labeling, case packing, cartoning, bottle and case coding, and vision system.

  • Possesses knowledge, background and working experience to apply sound engineering principles in support of process control system operation (PLC and DCS).

  • Interfaces frequently with inter-organizational and outside customer contacts. Represents the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • May include supervision of other engineers, technicians and interns.

Education/Experience

  • ​A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical or Electrical Engineering degree preferred) or closely related discipline is desired, or equivalent technical experience plus demonstrated competence.

  • Desired 5+ years of significant engineering and/or operational experience. Additional post-graduate education may contribute towards the years of experience.

Background Skills/Knowledge

  • Possesses a strong technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices, and procedures. Works on problems of complex scope where analysis of situations or data involves multiple competing factors.

  • Has a technical background in nutritional products, food and beverage manufacture, or similar industries.

  • Has experience with various Rockwell PLC platforms (PLC-5, ControlLogix, CompactLogix, SLC 500) and Emerson DeltaV. Experience with Modicon Quantum is preferred.

  • Possesses working knowledge of liquid filling, retort and secondary packaging operations.

  • Interacts well with diverse groups within engineering and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators.

  • Listens to and understands others’ points of view and articulates tactfully and respectfully one’s own perspective orally, in writing, and in presentations.

  • Works well with other engineers in a collaborative, fast-paced goal-driven environment. Possesses interpersonal skills to negotiate and reconcile differences.

  • Has demonstrated competency with fiscal control.
