JOB DESCRIPTION:

Primary Function / Primary Goals / Objectives:

The primary function of the Technician III position is to perform routine testing to support the Packaging and Innovation Laboratory's objectives. The Packaging Innovation Laboratory provides testing facilities, equipment and services to packaging engineers and other Abbott employees requiring package testing. A person in this position must be able to work independently to carry out routine analyses and to generate scientifically valid data. Technician III must also provide guidance to outside contractors to assure proper execution of assigned tasks.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Working in a technical environment with limited supervision

  • Routine testing on primary and secondary containers using a wide array of test instrumentation.

  • Recording data, analyzing the data using basic statistics and summarizing data in a report.

  • Training and cross-training on new test instrumentation.

  • Administrative assignments.

  • Lab Cleanup; Equipment maintenance.

Education:

  • Technical Associates Degree with laboratory experience.

  • B.S. or B.A. Degree with laboratory experience.

Requirements:

  • Ability to follow prepare simple reports, read and record gauge and display readings, and use their knowledge of packaging testing acquired through on the job training, external training, and formal education with limited assistance from Packaging management and Packaging engineers.

  • Mathematics knowledge would include basic statistics calculator skills and computer skills.

  • Expanded statistical comprehension is desirable.

  • Physical requirements for lifting and pushing 10-45 lbs. in addition to normal laboratory work.

  • Technician III shall maintain effective oral and written communication with other packaging technicians, packaging engineers, management and other client groups with varying levels of education and experience.

  • Able to effectively train new packaging technicians on assigned procedures and methods in the laboratory.

  • This position requires a high level of flexibility, adaptability and personal accountability due to the type and timing of the work involved.

Accountability / Scope/Budget:

  • A Technician III is fully responsible for their work. The work requests are reviewed and audited by the Packaging Lab Manager or designee for documentation errors.

  • This position is responsible for a high level of attention to detail in following proper lab methodologies, in ensuring the proper functionality of lab equipment and in completing related documentation. The testing conducted is used to test packaging designs and if completed inaccurately could result in a poor packaging design. Poor package design implementation could lead to product being damaged, rendered unusable or product returned by the customer. Poor designs can also lead to scrutiny by regulatory bodies based on a trend in complaints from the field.

  • The position is accountable for conducting laboratory methods accurately and safely. Also, the position is required to comply with any applicable external regulations, as well as Abbott Laboratories regulations, policies, procedures or guidelines.
