JOB DESCRIPTION:

We are seeking an experienced, high caliber Database Admin, Senior – Product Technology. (this is not a developer position). The Senior DBA works without appreciable supervision as a part of the Product Technology team (Global IT). Oversees, operates and coordinates large multi-tier systems, typically operational 24x7 basis with global users, and typically comprised of multiple technologies. Executes activities relating to the operation and maintenance of databases including monitoring, backups, installation, configuration and operation of new and existing databases. Work requires the application of technical as well as business principles and creative/analytical techniques typically acquired in a recognized four-year or more academic course of study. Implements Abbott IT specific policies, standards and procedures to accomplish assignments and resolves a broad range of issues and problems. Performs special assignments and projects as directed. Identifies and routinely uses the most effective, cost efficient and best business practices to execute processes; continually evaluates their effectiveness and appropriateness. Exercises independent judgment in planning, organizing and performing work; monitors performance and reports status to manager. Assures that quality of services meets requirements. Impact this role will have on Abbott: - Installs, configures and upgrades database software on various platforms - Responsible for providing and ensuring data availability, data integrity, and data security - Performs routine database administration functions including database capacity planning, pro-active performance monitoring and tuning, executing security procedures and backup and recovery processes - Ensures Golden gate replication streams and Data Guard log shipping is occurring and proactive monitoring is implemented - Performs operations to ensure Disaster Recovery site is updated and ready to GO LIVE when needed - Supports activities such as gathering requirements from internal clients and acts as a member of and resource to various application development and Remote Care Operation teams in the development, QA (Quality Assurance), and test/production environments - Contributes to development of new concepts and designs in collaboration with business users, other IT service delivery teams to implement new services, or resolve the most complex issues/changes to existing services - Develops, communicates and trains others on enterprise policies, standards and procedures - Contributes to complex and innovative business solutions to achieve strategic objectives and makes specific recommendations for solutions that meet business objectives - Provides recommendations for the implementation of highly available, tightly integrated, secure, flexible, and fault-tolerant systems - Works with key stakeholders to establish a vision and database architecture for the future, and establish a prioritized list of projects - Collaboratively works with the development team to ensure applications meet operational requirements and meet SLA goals - Works with considerable latitude in determining operational objectives, reports on status of reaching those objectives - Plans ahead for various database storage needs and communicates the plan clearly to storage admins to prevent outages and any last minute requests - Seeks direction from seniors in the team and also be able to mentor junior members in the team - Develops detailed cost breakdowns and implementation plans for new services - Works with management to ensure that all appropriate budget and cost containment policies are adhered to - Establishes trust and credibility at all levels of the organization - Researches and forecasts new technology capabilities and their applicability within the greater organization - Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments - Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors - Performs other related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as assigned Your experience(s), education and knowledge will further expand Abbott’s marketplace success: - Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent - 5+ years of technical experience in database administration including direct experience in a medium to large sized environment - A relevant advanced degree and/or appropriate professional certification, i.e., Oracle certifications, MSSQL/MYSQL certifications - Ability to administer postgres DB, golden gate & TDE features, and have ability to program in an administrative language (e.g., Perl, shell scripting) Your preferred qualifications and education: - In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with installation and maintenance of current or/and latest versions of relevant Oracle and /MSSQL/MySQL database software; experience supporting large-scale databases - Experienced in implementing and managing Golden Gate technology streams, Data guard log shipping and maintenance of Disaster Recovery sites and its backups - Periodic patching of systems, automation of routine activities and continuous improvement in monitoring is a must - Expert knowledge and comprehensive application of advanced Structured Query Language (SQL) concepts including PL-SQL, database backup, and restoration methods/techniques; expertise in database modeling (logical/physical) and design - Advanced knowledge of database administration and monitoring tools - Strong (OS) Operating System experience in both Linux and Windows and how they interact with the supporting DB for both tuning and support - Demonstrated understanding of High Data Availability concepts and methods, specifically Oracle RAC, Oracle Replication and DR methodologies - Demonstrated ability to understand and comply with all applicable regulatory and company operating procedures, processes, policies, and tasks - Experience in designing Oracle, MySQL/MSSQL database platforms - Strong process and procedure ownership experience for system audits - Highly organized, capable of multi-tasking and capable of coordinating/aligning resources under an integrated project plan - Strong problem solving skills - Must be able to respond quickly and debug Incidents and develop strategies to prevent them from reoccurring, monitoring improvements - Learn operational procedures and must be ready to respond to Disaster Recovery situations for the supported applications - Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence within and across organizations, functions and business areas - Excellent analytical, presentation, and organizational skills and the ability to meet multiple deadlines and work independently - Must be able to manage an assignment from start to completion - Must be adept at handling multiple assignments in a timely manner and meeting assigned deadlines - Able to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects - Ability to use discretion and handle sensitive/confidential information - Demonstrated ability to understand and comply with applicable regulations and Company operating procedures, processes, policies, and tasks - Must possess advanced computer skills including a working familiarity with system management tools and utilities, spreadsheets and document applications, communication tools, and other directly relevant applications - Must also have demonstrated effectiveness in the expeditious execution of IT transactions and the ability to work with clients as a strategic business partner - Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred - Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment - Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment - Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects - Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization - Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner - Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail - Ability to travel approximately 20%, including internationally - Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance
