Lead Engineer, can be based in Ottawa, Canada OR Princeton, NJ

Position Summary

Apply scientific knowledge, engineering knowledge, mathematics and ingenuity to complete moderately complex assignments with little to no supervision.

Main Responsibilities

Independently, or lead a project team to, identify, plan and conduct medium-size assigned projects requiring a combination of conventional and custom risk-managed execution plans, investigations and/or equipment. manages multiple often concurrent projects.

Lead complex technical projects with multiple inter-coordinating elements where problem resolution may involve the application of new methods and/or approaches and may require consideration of impact with other system components and/or users.

Lead and/or participate on cross-functional teams to support organizational goals.

Responsible for completing documentation in a timely manner and in accordance with business standards.

Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) or independent technical expert (ITE) on a subset or select subsets of a project's technical matters. may interface with external firms or agencies.

Other tasks and duties as assigned.

Understand and comply with applicable EHS policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the Quality System.


Works with limited direction; independently determines and develops approach to solutions; completed work is reviewed from a relatively long-term perspective for desired results; identifies and quantifies technical risks and their consequences relative to the success of part of a project and recommends action; decisions or recommendations would typically result in achieving critical departmental and/or project objectives; drives functional performance that ensure cross-functional standards and expectations are met;


Bachelor's degree (preferably in Engineering, science or a closely related discipline is desired) or equivalent technical experience and demonstrated competence required; additional post-graduate education may contribute toward the desired years of experience; Typically requires 6-7 years of significant engineering and / or operational experience to develop the competence to meet the skills and responsibilities of the position;

  • ability or aptitude to work on problems that are complex in scope where analysis of situations or data involves multiple competing factors;

  • ability and aptitude to use various types of databases and other computer software;

  • strong organizational and project management skills;

  • demonstrated competency with financial systems and in fiscal controls;

  • ability to quickly gain knowledge, understanding or skills and is willing to learn; Engineers trained in one branch of the Engineering field may work in related branches of engineering provided demonstrated transferable skills.
