Primary Function / Primary Goals / Objectives:

The Industrial Engineer provides plant manufacturing with support in the areas of line speed calculations and reporting, throughput evaluation, headcount justification, capacity analysis, and downtime evaluation. As part of the Business Excellence department, the Industrial Engineer also supports the plant with OpEx expertise and training.

Major Responsibilities:

Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.

  • Observing, analyzing, and supporting operations leading to business process improvement recommendations.

  • Lead OEE teams to improve plant capacity;

  • Identify and drive cost reduction and productivity improvement projects within Abbott Nutrition.

  • Lead and execute Lean Six Sigma projects within the business unit and effectively coordinate these projects with the functional champion and other project improvement teams. Project leadership includes identifying opportunities, coaching sponsors in the writing of effective project charters, financially justifying projects, launching project teams, using project management to manage team activities, leading teams to execute projects with the problem solving methodology, tracking project status and results, removing and elevating project barriers, and developing team members. It is also critical to identify integration issues with other projects/processes and coordinate the improvements with the appropriate project/process owners to accomplish the project goals.

  • Mentors others by sharing information and providing feedback and guidance.

  • Prepares written communication. Conveys information effectively through formal and informal documents with team members, designers, technicians, and other technical personnel, both internal and external to Abbott, using appropriate communication protocols; obtains approval to proceed with proposed action plans.

  • Establishes networks. Follows through on goals; contributes willingly and incorporates the ideas of others; shares resources, knowledge, and accountability to benefit the objectives of the business.

  • Builds relationships. Initiates and cultivates open, honest relationships with colleagues, customers, contractors, and vendors by establishing rapport, developing an understanding of others’ needs, promoting common goals, and following through on commitments, e.g. offers assistance; interacts effectively with stakeholders at appropriate levels of the organization.

Performs other work related duties as assigned.


A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with a desired 3+ years of significant engineering and/or operational experience.

Green belt certification desired.


Knowledge of applicable regulatory standards and requirements for infant formula and nutritionals.

  • Project management experience in multi-disciplined environment desired.

  • Work experience in the food / medical industry under FDA regulation preferred.

  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal required.

  • Possesses a working technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices, and procedures. Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data involves a review of identifiable factors. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.

  • Strong leadership skills required. Interacts well with diverse groups within the operation and maintains strong working relationships with internal in a collaborative, fast-paced, goal-driven environment. Listens to and understands others’ points of view; possesses interpersonal skills to negotiate and reconcile differences.

Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience using ZPI Zarpac and Flexsim is a plus.

Accountability / Scope/Budget:

The Industrial Engineer is accountable for the analyses and projects completion to improve OEE and reduce cost.
