Provides legal services and resolves legal matters for assigned responsibilities or clients. Supports the business in the achievement of business objectives by communicating advice of the Legal Department and managing legal risks to the corporation.

The Paralegal position is the junior position for paralegals in Abbott’s Legal Division. The Paralegal:

  • Identifies basic legal issues related to assigned matter

  • Performs substantive legal work that requires knowledge of legal concepts including analysis, drafting, negotiating and consulting

  • Resolves routine legal matters in area of responsibility with direct supervision from more experienced paralegals, paralegal supervisor and/or attorneys

  • Assists more experienced paralegals and/or attorneys in resolving legal issues on projects involving multiple disciplines within the Legal Division and/or multiple functional areas or divisions within Abbott

  • Developing knowledge of Abbott’s business and client areas supported

  • Keeps abreast of changes in laws that affect client areas

Research/Clinical:

  • Drafts, reviews, and negotiates a variety of research-related contracts, including clinical trials, services, consultants, confidentiality and other standard agreements;

  • Reviews and responds to proposed contract revisions from research service providers and negotiates directly with third parties;

  • Drafts and maintains research-related contract templates for utilization by Abbott’s global research divisions;

  • Monitors and reports on legislative and regulatory developments in global R&D;

  • Represents Abbott externally to research partners, service providers, and outside legal counsel;

  • Typically reports to Paralegal Supervisor or Senior Counsel

  • Drafts, reviews, and negotiates a variety of research-related contracts, including clinical research, services, consultants, confidentiality and other standard contracts;

  • Assists in creation and maintenance of templates to apply to a variety of client research contract needs;

  • Reviews and responds to proposed contract revisions from clinical service providers and negotiates directly with third parties;•

  • Interacts with various levels of management and with a variety of functional areas within the company;

  • Assists Senior Paralegal and attorneys with research and other assigned tasks.

Supervisory / Management Responsibility

  • Directs assigned support staff in their responsibilities

  • Typically reports to Paralegal Supervisor or an attorney.

Position Accountability/ Scope

  • Advises legal department managers of project developments in a timely manner

  • Executes core job responsibilities in a timely manner

  • Assigned matters typically have a significant impact on business activities and operations

  • Interacts across all levels of management

  • No direct department budget responsibility

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s Degree and/or relevant legal education (Paralegal certificate)

Experience/ Training Required

  • Generally 2 - 4 years of relevant legal experience

  • Developing proficiency in area of responsibility
