Job Description Summary

A Patent Searcher to define and conduct patent, scientific, business and other IP-related information searches. Review, analyze and synthesize search results. Present deliverables to clients in order to enable IP legal assessments, and to support decision-making within the R&D, New Business Development, and overall business process. Main outputs are:

  • Freedom-to-operate searches

  • Novelty and patentability searches

  • Patent opposition/invalidity studies

  • Competitive intelligence

  • Due diligence support

  • Monitoring third party patent applications, patent families and legal status

  • Report search results with value-added analysis to the Patent Counsels

Key Responsibilities

  • Define the search strategy (databases, classes and codes, keywords and indexing)

  • Search relevant information within available resources

  • Discuss strategies and relevant criteria, and report outcomes with the Patent Counsel and/or involved scientist or internal client

  • Monitor, update and improve his/her knowledge and expertise with respect to patent searching tools and resources

Key Skills

  • B.S. required. MS or PhD. in biological sciences/chemistry/engineering preferred

  • At least 3-5 years patent examining or patent searching experience in the healthcare/medical device/pharmaceutical industry, preferred

Familiar with:

  • Major patent related databases and hosts like STN, Questel, Dialog,

  • Text-mining and visualization tools

  • Patent law or training in intellectual property

  • Current developments in the patent information field
