PRIMARY JOB FUNCTION: As a Senior Scientist Product Development, you will be a leader in an innovative product development environment:

  • Conducts advanced research studies aimed at new or improved products.

  • Contribute to discipline strategy in alignment with functional goals and key scientific objectives.

  • Collaborating within Abbott and externally to achieve product design and process advances; influencing the diagnostics industry.

  • Leads projects and provides technical review, direction, and feedback to others.



Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.

Responsible for implementing strategic scientific initiatives; conceive and execute novel scientific research and/or new processes to address critical project needs. Integrate scientific knowledge into programs. Designs and conducts experiments, accomplishes established milestones and summarizes data, interprets, results and draws conclusions. Evaluates data using analytical methodologies to achieve results. Recommends options for future experiments. Presents scientific observations to others. Trains lower-level scientists.

Expertise and Problem Solving: Identifies technical alternatives. Utilizes multiple analytical instruments. Anticipates, recognizes and resolves technical problems.

Project Planning: Participates in project planning, updates and process improvements. Implements project plans comprehending resource, budget, facility and regulatory requirements. Translates top-level goals to specific project level goals for individual team member. Establishes and reviews complex plans for multiple projects or activities. Plans resource allocation and distribution.

Scientific Leadership: Submits ideas for inventions; publishes; innovates through patent filings and/or scientific publications. Perform FTO's (Freedom to Operate).

Economic Profitability: Provide direction to project team to meet economic profitability (EP) profile for the project (product cost analysis).

Lab Safety: Participates in lab safety. Documentation: Appropriately documents experimental procedures and results according to established guidelines.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITY / SCOPE: Across functional areas/programs within division. Contributes to project plan. Responsible for project completion.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. plus 2 years of research or industrial experience or B.S./M.S. with equivalency*. *Equivalency to Ph.D. defines as ability to hypothesize, design own experiments, draw conclusions and provide direction. Basic Computer Skills. Advanced Knowledge of multiple analytical instruments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years demonstrated technical and project leadership skills

  • 2+ years of experience with assay design across multiple formats/technology platforms in the chemical/biological sciences

  • 2+ year of experience with Good Lab Practices

  • Industrial and/or academic research experience in the area of medical device, biotechnology or combination

  • Experience with Abbott Diagnostics IA/CC platforms

  • Demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills

  • Individual must have excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Candidate must work well in collaborative environment across functional area

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry or other relevant scientific disciplines
