Abbott Principal Engineer Process Innovation - Powder Expansion in Columbus, Ohio

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Process Engineering lead on pre-PIER / NPD Stage 2 / Pre- FEP Gate 1 feasibility studies for major proposed Powder Network Capacity Expansion and Optimization programs assisting in determining provisional scope, manufacturability, cost, capital, risk and schedule considerations.

  • Support relevant capital FEP (Front End Planning) leading process design activities/deliverables up to FEP Gate 2, working closely with Regional Engineering, ANSC stakeholders and external equipment and A&E firms.

  • Process Engineering lead on approved PIER and NPD (Stage 2 onwards) projects supporting ANSC powder network expansion and optimization strategy.

  • Equipment vendor selection /assessments

  • DOE and pilot/plant trials and scalability assessments

  • Product characterization to support equipment design requirements

  • Provide input to user requirements, design specifications, process parameters

  • Support development of engineering studies, commissioning, and validation plans

  • Prepare P&ID’s, process flow diagrams and DfM KPI’s, provide process parameters targets and limits and review relevant controlled documents

  • Participate in process FMEA assessments

  • Design, execute and report outcomes / conclusions from engineering studies

  • Lead plant trials supporting smooth technical transfer of new processes working closely with manufacturing and project partners

  • Responsible for Process Innovation deliverables into Project Design Reviews and NPD Gate Decks

  • Design and conduct testing to evaluate new technologies, processing equipment changes

  • Support RFI/RFQ activities and review of vendor submissions / quotations

  • Provide effective communication through verbal and written reports

  • Support multiple, often concurrent, projects and meet assigned deadlines.

  • Interface frequently and effectively with program leadership and key stakeholders

  • 25-50% travel is anticipated as part of the role

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING

Required

  • Minimum 7+ years of relevant experience.

  • B.S. in Engineering, chemical preferred. B.S. / postgraduate qualification in Food Science/Food Chemistry also relevant.

  • A technical background in nutritional and food manufacturing processes with emphasis in powder manufacture including the following unit operations; batching, heat treatment / homogenization (emulsion technology), evaporation, UHT (indirect and direct), drying, dry blending, filling.

  • Experience in powder capital expansion programs with direct design responsibility

  • Disciplined and adaptable to work on a variety of projects

  • Knowledge of the impact of processing parameters on ingredients and finished product CQA’s.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work on cross functional teams is critical.

  • Ability to effectively analyze and summarize process and product information (using statistical methods) to determine solutions to production and quality issues.

  • Experience in process capacity/CFD/dryer modeling desired

  • Background or experience in DOE methodology valued.

  • Green or black belt qualification also relevant

  • Knowledge of functional ingredient manufacturing (e.g. proteins, emulsifiers), chemistry and food science is advantageous.

  • Computer skills include MS Office applications, AutoCad, OSI PI Processbook, Qualtrend, LIMS, QDMS, ANSYS, FlexSim, Minitab or equivalent.

  • Familiarity with infant formula and food regulations, HACCP/FMEA and GMP standards for quality desired.

  • The group supports the supply chain globally so US domestic and potentially international travel is anticipated.
