This position is responsible for providing technical knowledge and leadership in identifying and implementing packaging programs for Abbott Nutrition. The candidate must be able to apply advanced methods and techniques to the design of new packaging materials and structures. Programs will range from development of new materials through optimization of existing packaging for nutritional products. The candidate’s ability to effectively collaborate across divisional and regional boundaries is critical to success.

This position functionally resides in the Global Packaging Operations group, reporting directly to the Manager Packaging Operations. This candidate must coordinate multiple programs and be effective in working within a multidisciplinary environment. In addition, the candidate must effectively work with external partners that supply packaging commodities.

Primary Function: An engineering professional who, working with little or no supervision, applies scientific knowledge and engineering knowledge to complete assignments related to packaging. Primary job responsibilities include: identification and development of new packaging structures from concept through commercialization; identifying and implementing cost optimized opportunities with existing packaging; providing technical expertise on a wide range of packaging issues; applying leadership skills to manage projects; and establishing organizational alignment through effective communication. A Sr. Engineer has general knowledge of other related disciplines beyond their own.

Education/ Years Experience: A Bachelor’s Degree in packaging, engineering, science, or a closely related discipline is desired, or equivalent technical experience plus demonstrated competence, with a desired 5+ years of significant engineering and/or operational experience. Additional postgraduate education may contribute towards the desired years of experience.

Experience with extrusion blow molding and injection molding in food packaging is strongly preferred.

Major Responsibilities : Independently plans and conducts small- to medium-size assigned projects within packaging requiring conventional types of plans, investigations and/or equipment. Manages multiple, often concurrent, projects and meets deadlines.

Maintains project controls and reporting for cost, scope and schedule.

Mentors others by sharing technical expertise and providing feedback and guidance.

Interfaces frequently with inter-organizational and outside supplier contacts. Represents the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects or manufacturing events.
