This position directs a group of individuals that manage all technical aspects of the Abbott Nutrition Columbus Plant. This includes engineering support for all equipment, processes, strategic programs, utilities, and facilities associated with the site. Key areas of focus include quality improvements, operational improvements, and cost reductions.
The Technical Services Manager is responsible for managing the team that provides Validation, Calibration, and Maintenance services for the site and acts as the technical liaison between the plant and external functions such as Division, Corporate, and various government / industry groups. This position plays a key role in establishing and maintaining manufacturing and quality systems to assure that quality products are manufactured in a safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible manner.
Manage the activities of Engineers, Project Leaders, and Technicians in meeting plant goals and objectives in the areas outlined below.
Ownership of Plant PMO
Management of projects associated with the development and qualification of operational improvement and cost reduction initiatives according to Abbott policies and procedures.
Coordinate and supervise internal and external resources including outside engineering firms, contractors, service providers, and consultants.
Responsible for ensuring smooth transitions from design to production while maintaining quality and cost targets.
Manage plant strategic project portfolio.
- Design and implementation of new equipment and enhancements to existing production and processing equipment.
Facilities / Maintenance / Calibration:
Manage the facility engineering function for the Columbus site including all production areas, administrative offices, central utilities building (CUB), and grounds.
Ensure that adequate utilities are provided to the manufacturing site at all times.
Direct all site Calibration, Preventative Maintenance (PM), Demand Maintenance (DM), and associated systems per Division and Corporate policies.
Provide direction and support to ensure that the manufacturing processes operate effectively and efficiently to meet all business needs, quality targets, and regulatory requirements.
Technical expert and engineering approver for Material Review Board (MRB) activity relating to technical issues with components, manufacturing processes, equipment, facilities, and utilities.
Provide technical expertise to all other plant departments such as Quality Assurance, Manufacturing, Marketing, and EH&S.
Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.
Act as the site’s Validation Administrator and coordinate the Validation Review Board (VRB) relating to validations for equipment, processes and facilities.
Responsible for maintaining/ monitoring the site Validation Master Plan (VMP) and for managing certification and validation of plant equipment and systems such that all division, company, and regulatory requirements are met.
Engineering approver for all relevant change control activities including equipment, processes, procedures, specifications, and drawings.
Ensure that all needed engineering records and documents are properly maintained.
Ensure that team members follow all quality system regulations and standard operating procedures relating to the above activities.
Develop and manage all short and long-term goals and objectives of the plant engineering personnel along with the associated performance and disciplinary issues.
Provide proper departmental staffing, training, and career development.
Manage the engineering department expense budget, headcount, overtime and department schedules.
Responsible for preparing and maintaining the site capital budget and long-range-plan (LRP).

Bachelor degree in Engineering, Business, Operations or Science discipline required.
Operations related Management/ Supervision: 3-5 years required
Maintenance Management: 1-3 years preferred
Manufacturing / Facilities Engineering: 3-5 years preferred
Process / Project Engineering: 3-5 years preferred
Total combined years of experience required: 8-10 years
A broad technical background is essential to manage the department effectively and provide the technical expertise to evaluate and predict impact of process/equipment changes and issues.
The nature of the business requires that the appropriate skill set is readily available to quickly solve problems before they have a large impact on production or product quality.
Knowledge of applicable regulatory standards and requirements for infant formula and nutritionals.
Accountability / Scope:
The position has responsibility for all Process / Equipment Engineering, Energy Center, Facilities, Maintenance, Calibration, and Validation within the Columbus plant.
This position is the highest authority at the site on matters of a technical nature.
Decisions reached in this position can influence the design of major construction projects and equipment installations reaching into the millions of dollars.
Failures in this department can result in fines, lost market share, product recall, possible customer/ patient injury, and/or severely impacted/ halted production resulting in out of stock situations.
Decisions reached by this role can impact employee safety and morale.
The manager independently manages the department and reports directly to the Site Director.
The manager is responsible for the management of annual capital and expense budgets.
The Technical Services Manager exercises independent judgment in working with the department, outside contractors and manufacturers in order to achieve business objectives.
Limits to decision making is dictated by financial and statutory/regulatory/policy requirements.
