Abbott Senior Legal Counsel Benelux/France in Diegem, Belgium

Abbott is recruiting a Senior Legal Counsel – Benelux/ France.

The Senior Legal Counsel’s primary role will be to provide legal advice and direction to all divisions based in Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and France with a particular focus on Abbott’s medical devices businesses but also covering other divisions and the pharmaceutical and nutrition business sites in Netherlands.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Identifies and manages moderate to complex legal issues related to assigned matter; proposes effective risk assessments and strategic solutions to local businesses

  • Negotiates independently on significant matters and areas of importance to management

  • Anticipates risk effectively and develops a strong 360-degree view of environmental-business issues impacting the business.

  • Communicates and elevates matters effectively and influences stakeholders in order to drive the right business solution

  • Resolves routine and moderately complex to complex legal matters day to day in practice areas with minimal or no supervision

  • Keeps abreast of changes in laws that affect client areas; communicates these to colleagues; and represents Abbott externally to customers, suppliers, competitors or government agencies

  • Resolves legal issues using negotiation skills and legal expertise; coaches and directs supporting staff in their responsibilities

  • Supports and challenges French Counsel to ensure a perfected work product and risk analysis for complex France/NW Africa issues. Coordinates efficient legal support across Abbott’s EMEA francophone businesses.

  • To the extent that complex problems or specific technical expertise is required, helps to direct the work of external counsel, defines project objectives, manages costs and manages project in line with business expectations

  • Supports other EMEA projects as part of the wider ILO EMEA team.

  • Must operate within appropriate budget(s). Develops budgets for assigned legal matters where necessary.

Background Experience/Training Required:

  • 8-10 years of post-qualification experience

  • Strong inhouse experience in general commercial law covering all key areas in a regulated industry, ideally healthcare/medical devices

  • Ability to create a sophisticated risk analysis of any given situation and not just advise on the law.

  • Public procurement law experience (preferably in the healthcare sector) ideally obtained in private practice

  • Strong awareness of compliance and data privacy law issues

  • Strong project management skills

  • Strong drafting, negotiation and clear/concise communication skills

  • Experience of managing a small team or ad hoc project leadership

  • European Union anti-trust law

  • Languages: English, Dutch and French
