The Abbott Diabetes Care division based in Donegal Town manufactures FreeStyle blood glucose test strips for use in diabetes management. Among Abbott Diabetes Care leading brands are the FreeStyle Precision, FreeStyle Lite and FreeStyle Libre system.

In the North West of Ireland we are currently going through a significant expansion as we introduce new technology and machinery to manufacture the Libre Freestyle Sensor which is revolutionary in the care and management of Diabetes as part of that expansion we have an immediate requirement for a Technical Engineering Manager.

The Technical Engineering Manager is responsible for leading a team that provides technical engineering support, in order to maximize the availability of manufacturing and test equipment, and lead strategic engineering projects.


  • Plan, implement and manage all major engineering projects including validation activities, RCE documentation etc. as required.

  • Manage relevant departmental/project budgets within target and implement CIP/BEx projects as required.

  • Provide technical support and knowledge.

  • Ensure the project meets quality requirements of all stakeholders, including customers, auditors and other external agencies by ensuring adherence to the required policies and procedures.

  • Measures and reports progress against approved timelines.

  • Acts as an effective project leader or team member in supporting timelines, quality disciplines, decisions, and practices.

  • Ensure prompt attention of the Project Manager in areas of risk, which might have an adverse effect on product and/or safety.

  • Ensure the department conducts its business in a manner designed to be protective of human health, safety, and the environment.


  • A relevant third level qualification in Engineering/Manufacturing/Science.

Minimum Experience

  • At least 5 years relevant experience in a GMP controlled environment

  • 5 years staff management experience in a relevant manufacturing, healthcare or pharmaceutical environment.

  • Proven record of successfully executing engineering projects.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, proven ability to work with people and manage cross functional teams to deliver results and achieve goals.

  • Good presentation/verbal/written skills with all organizational layers.
