Abbott Diagnostics Division (ADD) Longford

Abbott established the first diagnostics manufacturing facility in Sligo in 1994 to manufacture blood-screening products and reagents. In 2004, Abbott Diagnostics operations in Ireland expanded with the opening of a second facility in Longford. The plant was first occupied in December 2004. Manufacturing commenced in March of the following year and the first product (Architect TSH) was launched in December of 2005. The Longford facility plays a key role in helping Abbott to meet the increasing global demand for diagnostic testing in areas such as infectious disease, cancer, thyroid and cardiovascular diseases.

We currently have a temporary vacancy for a Instrumentation Engineer (Night Shift) and this role will involve the following:

Primary Function

  • Engineering technicians will be responsible for the hands on running and maintenance of plant, utilities and equipment.

  • They will be responsible for maximising availability of FUE.

  • This group will have three distinct responsibilities namely manufacturing, facilities and electrical, however any technician may work in any area as required.

Major Responsibilities

  • Maintain ETMS TO DO LIST.

  • Conduct business in a manner that will protect human health, safety and the environment by complying with all applicable EHS laws, as well at the Abbott Global and Technical standards.

  • Install and validate new and upgraded test instruments.

  • Maintain the preventative maintenance schedule and complete any demand maintenance as required.

  • Co-ordinate the calibration of equipment in accordance with the calibration system.

  • Completion and recording of functional and safety checks on test instruments and correction of any deviations from specifications.

  • Completion of all required documentation associated with instruments/calibration in a timely manner.

  • Notify management of any risk in product test operations, which may have adverse effects on product quality or safety.

  • Maintain and manage a stock of required spares for instruments.

  • Support engineering function in any projects or process requirements, which are appropriate.

Supervisory / Management Responsibility

  • Individual Contributor or Works independently

Education & Experience

  • A trade cert or relevant third level qualification in engineering or related discipline provides a good foundation for this job function.

  • Two years experience in a relevant engineering role to understand the nature of the business


· Accountable for the running condition of instruments and ensuring these are working within specification and with minimum of downtime.

· Responsible for maintenance of equipment in an efficient and safe manner.
