Abbott Ireland Diagnostic Division – Longford:

Abbott established a diagnostics manufacturing facility in Sligo in 1994 to manufacture blood-screening products and reagents.

In 2004, Abbott’s operations in Ireland expanded with the opening of a second facility in Longford. The plant was first occupied in December 2004, and the first product (Architect® TSH) was launched in December of 2005.

The Longford facility plays a key role in helping Abbott to meet the increasing global demand for diagnostic testing in areas such as infectious disease, cancer, thyroid and cardiovascular diseases.

Abbott in Longford manufactures 18 diagnostic reagent products for thyroid function, fertility, and pregnancy, cardiology, renal and metabolic. Our products are manufactured to the highest standards of quality and are regulated by bodies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

We currently have a position for a Manufacturing Engineering Technician (Day Shift) and this role will involve the following:

Primary Function

  • Process Engineering technicians will be responsible for the hands on running and maintenance of critical plant, utilities and equipment.

  • They will be responsible for maximizing availability of FUE and perform the day

today preventative and demand maintenance activity to maintain FUE

  • This group will have responsibilities namely manufacturing, facilities and electrical, equipment and processes.

  • Primary role will ensure that all critical plant services and processes are maintained to the highest standards.

  • Process Engineering Technicians will hold responsibility for the day to day maintenance of the Clean in Place process skids and related equipment.

  • Liaise with Internal/External Engineering Personnel and contract maintenance providers in maintaining trouble shooting, and installing/commissioning equipment related to Critical FUE or Process related equipment in manufacturing areas.

  • Contribute towards an efficient Energy Management Program and implement initiatives to reduce energy requirement and costs.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Maintain ETMS TO DO LIST.

  • Conduct business in a manner that will protect human health, safety and the environment by complying with all applicable EHS laws, as well at the Abbott Global and Technical standards.

  • Perform day-to-day preventative and demand maintenance as required.

  • Liaison and coordination of external contractors to complete required maintenance or breakdown service.

  • Hands on role at trouble shooting/faultfinding and maintaining equipment and plant related items to ensure the proper operation and service of equipment and utilities to plant standards.

  • Develop a detailed understanding of all clean room HVAC, equipment, and utilities to troubleshoot and resolve problems.

  • Resolve technical issues in an effective & timely manner to support operations.

  • Ensuring equipment/systems meets the required legal, divisional and corporate standards.

  • Ensuring safety standards are met and safe-working practices adhered to.

  • Communicate effectively with plant management, corporate and division engineering.

Supervisory / Management Responsibility

  • Individual Contributor or Works independently

Education & Experience

You will have a relevant third level qualification in Engineering and/or senior trades with a minimum of two years experience in a similar role.


·Accountable for ensuring uninterrupted Utilities and plant equipment for all area’s of the plant.

·Position will be responsible to operate all engineering functions in line with the plant quality policy with minimum supervision.
