Abbott Biologicals Olst is worldwide responsible for the filling of lactulose, the production of hormone preparations and the formulation of Mebeverine. In addition, the flu vaccine Influvac® is filled at the site and contract manufacturing takes place. For these products, Abbott Biologicals in Olst is the center of excellence.

For our Business Excellence department we are looking for a:

Business Excellence Manager

implementing and ensuring Operational Excellence, with the aim of efficient, consistent and effective working processes.

The Job

The BEx Manager Drives Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvement on site level. Engages site leadership and employees by assuring and enforcing strong alignment between the business objectives and the projects. Supports achieving the site’s gross margin improvement targets and financial goals by driving productivity, cost and cash flow improvements.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Define, propose and implement objectives and best practices.

  • Follow up, regularly review and improve work methods, procedures and organization.

  • Strive for a continuous improvement culture, where employees improve their processes step by step..

  • Analyze processes in order to identify potential improvement ideas.

  • Calculate, during this analysis, which results may be expected and monitor the realized results during the implementation.

  • Identify gaps and opportunities with an effective data collection and reporting system as well as frequent internal and external benchmarking. Support the development and sharing of good practices within the EPD Operational Excellence Network.

  • Spread a culture of continuous improvement, supported with strong communication and a local training program reaching the entire target population with tailor made content.

  • Provide coaching, mentoring and training to employees on all levels.

  • Develop and analyze organizational bottlenecks and possible solutions.

  • Maintain contacts with BEx teams of other Abbott sites and Global BEx for exchanging ‘best practices’.

Manage the Department’s activity

  • Share responsibility with Site Director on Continuous Improvement target setting and execution. Work closely with Controlling on translating operational performance into financial performance and own the plan commitments for CIP. Maintain the organization's master plan and the CIP.

  • Support partners in the EPD network on their continuous improvement projects.

  • Communicate to management results and developments realized in the department

Assure inter plant & global coordination

  • Secure that communication flow between the own and other departments is ongoing

  • Inform the management colleagues about the results of the own department and inform the own team about the strategy decisions of the site.

Manage the department’s budget/investments

  • Develop, approve and management of related budgets (evolution, differences).

  • Explain budget variances and avoid exceeding.

  • Analyze derivations and take corrective actions.

  • Establish, in close alignment with the manager controlling, a yearly investment plan for the department, and justify and defend it.

Define and plan strategies and programs

  • Contribute to and develop the strategy, contribute to the development of plans and ensure implementation is in accordance with operational needs.

  • Define strategies and necessary actions to respond and/or anticipate to changes.

  • Propose to and discuss with the Abbott-management the (pre-)selected projects, actions, technologies, methodologies and approaches, and negotiate priorities for implementation.


  • University (WO) ) in one of the following disciplines: Business Administration, Controlling, Engineering, Operations, Logistics Management. Certified Black Belt.

  • Practical knowledge and experience with Lean, Six Sigma and similar tools and methods

  • At least 3 years of experience in a pharmaceutical, healthcare or nutrition’s manufacturing environment or in quality roles in manufacturing.
