Our location in Santa Clara, California currently has an opportunity for a 2nd shift Research & Development Lab Manager .

Hours of 2nd shift are 3:30 pm – 12:00 am PT; training will be held during day shift.


The 2nd shift lab manager supports the Abbott Hematology organization by managing system verification activities and being a Subject Matter Expert in technical aspects of the organization's instrumentation platforms. The position comprises of System Integration and Verification responsibilities within an R&D team by supporting and developing Hematology testing platforms.

  • Supervises assigned workstation, noting trends, problems, etc. Communicate with R&D teams on analyzer-related problems.

  • Identifies contingency plans. Executes project plan fully utilizing the available resources. Maintains appropriate documentation so that information and materials are traceable and processes are transferable.

  • Influences decision-making through negotiation, addressing conflict, and by building productive working relationships within a project. Participate in technology teams.

  • Looks for ways to improve efficiencies and reduce costs. Identifies implicit assumptions in the way problems or situations are defined or presented.

  • Demonstrates responsibility for ensuring that information is received and understood by the receiver to accomplish desired outcomes. Takes thoughtful, yet timely, action when confronted with a problem or when made aware of a situation.

  • Manages and performs IQ/OQ/PQ activities, as necessary, on new equipment.

  • Identifies, confirms and interprets interacting causes & effects behind instrument issues, discrepancies, problems or complaints in accordance with governing procedures.

  • Gathers data to support troubleshooting efforts across multiple system functions (hardware and software or hardware and assay performance problems).

  • Works closely with System Integration to plan system upgrades and preventative maintenance.Leads internal investigations into lab instrument issues

  • Devises root cause hypotheses and confirms instrument issues, discrepancies, problems or complaints in accordance with governing procedures.

  • Provides input into product and process improvements.

  • Creates CLSI based test protocols and review with stakeholders to align with program objectives.

  • Executes study protocols following good lab practices to align with Abbott Quality procedures to support on-market changes and product improvements

  • Applies quantitative methods, analyzes data, evaluates results, forms conclusions and provides/implements improvements.

  • Records and communicate experimental results to technical personnel with diverse scientific backgrounds.

  • Performs all duties in compliance with appropriate regulations and company policies

  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.

  • Maintains effective communications within ADD Hematology organization & leadership

  • Collaborates with cross functional teams in order to obtain successful resolutions of instrument issues.

  • Writes & executes system verification test protocols, developing new instrument procedures and analyzing performance data will be essential to the role.

  • Manages and provide leadership and guidance to team members



  • Bachelors Degree (± 16 years) in engineering or life sciences

  • Minimum 6 years Experience in a Biosciences or Engineering capacity


  • Hematology lab experience with emphasis on contriving whole blood specimens preferred

  • Experience in managing a clinical laboratory maintaining and running diagnostic medical equipment preferred

  • Experience planning and executing system verification activities preferred

  • Experience with statistical planning and analysis preferred

  • Experience with project planning and management using MS Projects preferred
