This role is to lead the Software Test team responsible for the development of software for complex electro-mechanical Hematology analyzers. This is a key leadership role in the Software Engineering Team and responsible for driving R&D software development in alignment with R&D Program objectives. This position will report to the Director of Software Engineering.

The role will have responsibilities for developing and implementing testing strategies and tactics to ensure software produced meets the software requirements, system requirements and most importantly customer needs. This covers the process from initial concept, requirement development, implementation, verification and beyond product launch. The position requires both the ability to develop strategic plans as a R&D leader and the technical ability to ensure robust and innovative solutions are utilized to develop reliable, high performing software.

The role conceives, plans, executes and tracks the program/projects and resources to meet strategic business needs while accommodating unforeseen events with timely and sound risk assessments and contingency plans. Key responsibilities include defining staffing, managing budget and overseeing analysis of technical problems and their solutions.

The Hematology organization is an exciting phase with its flagship product and is looking to bring efficiencies within the software organization by leveraging test automation.

The team will consist of approximately 12 Software Test Engineers. Key interfaces for this role includes Systems Engineering, Program Management, Hardware Engineering, Quality and Commercial organizations.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Technical Management of R&D (Software or Software Verification & Validation) personnel. Manages system(s) design,design risk reduction,implementation,verification and validation of future or derivative instrumentation. Manages department budgets, HR merit increases and promotions. Administers R&D scope,staffing and budget guidelines for feasibility and development phases of systems development programs.

  • Manages experienced professionals who exercise latitude and independence in their assignments.

  • Influence engineering budgets and capital plans

  • Interprets and administers policies and procedures that may affect department and subordinate sections

  • Assists in planning and organizing, and leads some aspects of a project regarding budgeting, staffing, communication and conflict resolution

  • Participates in and presents at briefings and technical meetings for internal and external representatives.

  • Participates in development initiatives for R&D personnel include sponsoring of intern students, recruiting activities and technical training.

  • Multi-disciplined thinker, influences system design and prioritizes engineering technical risks in developing new systems.

  • Cultivates excellent working relationships with outside Abbott partners and then ensure effective communication and problem solving (including people/personality issues).

Qualifications:

  • Four year degree in technical or scientific discipline or 6+ years of relevant experience (Post graduate degree preferred)

  • 5 + Years of industry experience

  • Understands engineering standards, FDA regulation, performance confirmation methods and development practices within Abbott, or in a comparable environment outside of Abbott (i.e. DOD, Aerospace, etc.).

  • Must have project management experience in managing multiple projects

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of leadership experience required. 10+ years in Software test and/or software development

  • Demonstrated ability to develop complex products that meet cost, time and quality standards

  • Experience in automated testing and relevant strategies

  • Experience developing and managing successful relationship with vendors

  • Experience in requirements management
