Abbott Sr Product Manager - Upstream in Santa Clara, California

Abbott Vascular provides innovative, minimally invasive and cost-effective products for treatment of vascular disease. Our extensive portfolio includes drug-eluting stents, bare metal stents, guide wires, balloon dilatation catheters, imaging catheters and software, vessel closure devices and peripheral stents.

Our location in Santa Clara, CA currently has an opportunity for a Sr Product Manager. This exciting opportunity includes creating and executing to the strategic product roadmap and business plans for sustained growth of the endovascular business. Activities include gaining insights from customers through KOL engagement and VOC feedback. This role involves overseeing market research, monitoring competitive activity, and identifying customer needs. This is an excellent position involving partnering with R&D and Business Development to create business plans and opportunity assessments of internal and external product opportunities including financial modeling. And leading cross-functional teams/groups with little supervision, to develop new products or enhance existing product(s) or product line(s).


  • Provide technical and product expertise to the downstream and commercial teams on products on the roadmap.

  • Create the product roadmap and business plan for the endovascular business for next 5+ years. Focus on internal product development and external growth opportunities for vascular diseases outside of the heart.

  • Partner closely with key opinion leaders (KOLs) to anticipate the future market environment, changes in economic climate, the onset of new competitors including adjacent players and to predict/drive future needs for current and future customers

  • Collect and interpret voice of customer (VOC) input and monitor competitive activity in order to define market requirements and independently design market research to inform the business plan

  • Experience with market research, including conducting interviews, compiling findings, and turning insights into practical next steps

  • Develop the business case for new opportunities including defining the market and customer needs, financial modeling and data analysis to quantify the sales and profit, value proposition and assessing the strategic fit

  • Collaborate closely with R&D to translate customer requirements into innovations

  • Collaborate closely with Business Development to identify and assess value and strategic fit of inorganic opportunities

  • Working with clinical, regulatory, R&D and other functions to develop pipeline strategy

  • Provide leadership by representing the customer with internal project teams. Manages the marketing aspects of projects involving cross functional groups

  • Provide leadership for their programs as the product expert to downstream and commercial marketing teams and with customers. Partners with downstream and commercial teams to develop initial launch and communication plans

  • Prior experience and comfort presenting to, working with, and negotiating with different layers of cross-functional management to execute global market strategies and actionable market plans to advance the business and generate value within a portfolio

  • Presentation and clear layout of business cases to Sr Management

  • Coach others within Marketing in the development of upstream projects and/or programs

  • Thorough understanding of Division business, product lines, market space, and Abbott businesses

  • Act as an advisor to management on specialized business projects

  • Provide broad, technical advice. Mentors employees by sharing technical expertise and providing feedback and guidance

  • Understand project timeline and makes and presents recommendations based on risk analysis when project is off course

  • Determine emerging trends and provides information across functional boundaries in areas of expertise



Bachelors Degree (± 16 years) in a related field.

Or an equivalent combination of education and work experience

Minimum 5 years experience.

5-8 years of related work experience with a complete understanding of specified functional area. Minimum 5 years brand management experience.

Comprehensive knowledge of business concepts, procedures and practices. Uses knowledge of in-depth business unit dependencies/ relationships.

Acts as a technical resource.

Develops financial models

Recognized as an expert in the company.

Will perform this job in a quality system environment.

Failure to adequately perform tasks can result in noncompliance with governmental regulations.

Works on extremely complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangible variables.

Exercises judgment in developing methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

Masters Degree (± 18 years) or MBA

Product management experience

Medical device experience

Experience conducting market research and obtaining VOC input
