Abbott Area Strategic Planning & Business Development Director – Asia Pacific in Singapore, Singapore

The Area Strategic Planning & Business Development Director – Asia Pacific serves as a senior member of the Diabetes Care Asia Pacific Leadership Team, providing strategic leadership as well as taking the lead in driving sustainable growth via partnerships or business development opportunities, both at the Area and Country level.

Reporting to the Division Vice President – Asia Pacific and working closely with the Area and respective Country Senior Management to set vision and strategy and lead execution to deliver sales, margin and market share goals.

This role leads a team based in Singapore, Japan & India, responsible for long-rang planning, market/competitive intelligence, product portfolio roadmap development and business development for the Area, that may require up to 40% travel.


Strategic Planning

  • Set vision and define fact-based, customer-focused strategic plans based on insight from payers, healthcare professionals, consumers and regulatory agencies. Communicate vision and lead organization in execution of strategy.

  • Partner with the General Managers, Area Commercial Director & Area Controller, to develop the annual plan as well as the 3-year plan, strengthen the Division’s strategic growth and accelerate our life-saving technologies to the millions of people with diabetes in Asia Pacific.

  • Monitor the external environment, identify strategic opportunities and competitive threats in the Area and proactively plan for potential impact on the Division’s business (e.g., translate opportunities into action; propose actions to neutralize threats).

  • Act as a strategic “think tank” for Senior Management on key business issues.

Business Development

  • Set aggressive goals and deliver results in line with Abbott’s performance expectations. Develop rolling quarterly forecasts, monitor and report progress, and adjust plans to ensure commitments are met. Anticipate risks/changing market conditions, define and execute mitigation plans to ensure commitments are met.

  • Identify key business opportunities, formulate hypotheses, collect qualitative and quantitative data necessary to evaluate the hypotheses, perform analysis and summarize conclusions/ recommendations with minimal guidance.

  • Create business cases to support new market entries, product introductions & to accelerate growth.

  • Represent ADC and lead in all external & internal partnerships.


  • Ability to make difficult decisions (i.e. people, business, customer-related) in a timely manner. Uphold Abbott’s commitment to ethics and compliance.

  • Stakeholder Management. Understand and manage the expectations of internal (functional leaders, affiliate GMs, OEC) and external (payers, government bodies, industry associations, potential business partners) stakeholders to achieve goals and deliver on commitments.

  • Build Organization. Attract, develop and retain industry’s best talent. Build a high-performing, cohesive team. Establish sustainable pipeline of leadership talent. Identify critical roles and ensure “A” talent is positioned in each critical role. Define appropriate development plans to ensure high-potential talent is groomed for critical positions.

Qualifications/ Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts/Science in business required; MBA from top-tier school preferred.

  • Proven leader with five or more years’ experience, preferably in the pharmaceutical and/or medical device industry in the commercial arena &/or business development.

  • High-energy, self-starter that is assertive, possesses a high degree of self-confidence and intellectual curiosity, exhibits a bias for action, demonstrates good executive presence, and has a high degree of commitment to meeting deadlines and objectives.

  • Outstanding strategic planning and analytical skills – proven ability to identify/define business questions and issues, synthesize information from multiple sources, conduct analysis, formulate actionable recommendations and confidently recommend a point-of-view to senior management.

  • Innovative and creative – demonstrated ability to leverage consumer insights to identify and evaluate creative ideas, focusing on those that will create sustainable competitive advantage.

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with the ability to build strong, collaborative working relationships with all levels of management, the sales force and customers.

  • Strong project management skills, with proven ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently under aggressive timelines in a dynamic environment while maintaining strong attention to detail and quick recall.

  • Strong knowledge of accounting & finance, with high business acumen.

  • Ability to influence and execute flawlessly either by self or through others.

  • Verbal and written fluency in Japanese and/or Mandarin would be advantageous.
