Senior Principal Electrical Engineer (Analog) – St. Paul, MN

We are recruiting for a Senior Principal Electrical Engineer-Analog to join our team at our St. Paul, MN location. In this role, you will be responsible for designing capital devices that are fully compliant to 60601 regulations in Abbott’s Electrophysiology medical device division. You will be instrumental in the design and development of capital products with strong emphasis/focus on analog design principles. This includes initiating the planning, organizing, performing, coordinating, documentation and/or directing of all EMC and Safety testing with external contract houses as necessary, as well as determining the layout, construction, and evaluation of a variety of prototype printed circuit assemblies, fixtures, and tools. You will apply advanced engineering and scientific principles to the evaluation and solution of technical challenges within this division and performing technical studies in support of project goals. You will be the subject matter expert (SME) on all medical device standards updates, identifying and using the most effective, cost efficient, and best practices to execute processes, and continually evaluate the effectiveness and appropriateness.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Completes electrical engineering deliverables with focus of analog designs. This includes setting and revising requirements and specifications, debugging, testing electrical circuits and systems, and completing documentation to ensure feasibility and verifiability of performance

  • Effectively communicates the project successes, risks, and roadblocks to the appropriate management levels.

  • Conceptualizes new designs using technical expertise and innovative approaches

  • Identifies and mitigates project risks

  • Coordinates and assists with all safety and EMC testing

  • Documents all planned safety and EMC test protocols of development teams in support of project goals

  • Interfaces with various internal functions, outside consultants, vendors, and the medical community

  • Participates and/or leads on engineering teams in completing development projects

  • Ensures compliance with procedural and documentation requirements of Abbott, FDA and ISO design controls.

  • Plans, coordinates, and assists in executing the activities of development teams in support of project goals

  • Supports animal studies, bench testing, clinical evaluations, and production

  • Establishes test methods and model development

  • Supports and leads design reviews

  • Leads and contributes to strategic initiatives for continuous improvement

  • Solves complex and diverse technical problems by applying sound judgment, creativity, appropriate data analysis, and technical expertise



  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related discipline

  • 10+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience, including hands-on analog & digital circuit design experience

  • Demonstrated experience with printed circuit board design, schematic entry, and/or design simulation

  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization


  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related discipline

  • Medical device experience

  • Familiarity with IEC 60601 family of standards

  • Project management and/or leading projects

  • Statistical analysis, or similar tool set
