Our team supports a rapidly expanding business unit within Abbott. We serve and support a global customer base and provide essential testing solution including rapid COVID-19 tests (ID NOW, BinaxNow, Pnbio, etc.). Our primary ERP systems are SAP and Fourth Shift.

Reporting to the Sr. Manager of Procurement, the Purchasing Specialist will support the purchasing responsibilities for the Division and function as the key point of contact for our suppliers and cross-functional partners across the globe, to ensure supply and cost effectiveness for critical purchased components within the business unit. This role is to be based in the Abbott Rapid Diagnostics headquarters located in Lake Forest, IL, USA.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Participate in monthly S&OPprocess and lead key accessories and components demand and supply reviewprocess.

  • Represents procurement in new productintroductions, creating cut-in/out plans, coordinating with suppliers, andmanaging the overall process.

  • Participates in the direct andindirect purchasing of materials, with daily duties including PO placementand management, master data management, and reconciliation with accountspayable.

  • Ensures the uninterrupted flow ofproduction by obtaining and ensuring delivery of acceptable quality goodsand services at the right time and at the maximum end-use value per dollarspent.

  • Responsible for evaluating andapproving suppliers of raw materials, components, finished products, andservices to Alere. Responsible for monitoring the Approved Supplier List(ASL) and coordinating with Supplier Quality and global category managerson additions/deletions.

  • Reviews and provides recommendationson contracts, negotiations, redlines, etc. with internal and externalstakeholders.

  • Participates in data tracking,analysis, recommendation/business case development, and reporting toinclude scorecards, inventory management, market& supplierassessments, quote package development & analyses, and make v. buydecisions.

  • Develops business relationships withsuppliers to preserve the company’s good business reputation while stillobtaining competitive prices.

  • Maintains good relations with internaland external customers by ensuring professional behavior consistent withcompany policies and practices. Must work effectively with the end-usersof products and services by processing their requirements in a timelymanner and ensuring that the goods and/or services will support theirneeds.

  • Complies with applicable antitrust andother purchasing-related laws and regulations including FederalAcquisition Regulations for government contracts.

  • Complies with applicable corporate policies& procedures and FDA/ISO regulations pertaining to the purchasingfunction.

  • Demonstrates commitment to thedevelopment, implementation and effectiveness of the company’s QualityManagement System per ISO, FDA, and other regulatory agencies.

  • Resolves complaints and disputesbetween requestors, purchasing, receiving, vendors, and any otherapplicable stakeholders.


Preferred educational background:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BS) in Business Administration, Supply Chain, Finance, or Engineering or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 2+ years of experience in purchasing or progressively responsible positions in a structured and analytical environment.

  • Prior experience with MRP software. Required experiential background:

  • Experience managing and taking action to achieve KPIs such as savings targets, inventory turns, on-time delivery, forecast accuracy, etc.

  • Ability to take the initiative and execute in a fast-moving and complex environment, using good judgement to make well-reasoned decisions, even with less than perfect information.

  • Acts with a sense of urgency, and willingly takes on tactical roles as necessary to achieve objectives.

  • Strong skills with the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Project) is a must.
